i am a butler
Objective: Defining “identity” is a difficult task because it encompasses many different things both abstract and physical. This project explores what “identity” means to me on a personal level.
Concept: In breaking down what “identity” means to me, I arose at I AM A BUTLER. My surname is a legacy of those who came before me, and one that I will be a part of to those who come after. There is a strong artistic gene that called for a celebration of family tradition to be honored in this book. It is a compilation of artwork, poems, and a few synopses of my family told through personal photographs and my own memories.
By listening to family stories, looking at photographs, and finding a family crest my dad had drawn, I found it only fitting to showcase my family’s work in a scrapbook type fashion with notes in the margins and correlating objects to reflect their work. Not only does this book encapsulate what “identity” means to me, it comes full circle with what it means to them, proving that the idea is multifaceted, complex, and none exactly alike.
